Tunguska was a comet, not a rock
The 1908 Tunguska blast flattened a forest but left no crater, and for several nights afterward the sky over Europe and Asia glowed bright enough to read a newspaper at midnight. Our theory: a piece of a comet, mostly ice and dust, exploded in the air, and its dust lit up the night sky.
What fits
- No crater and no large meteorite pieces have been found.
- A cloud of fine dust high in the air fits the glowing nights.
What does not
- Many scientists now favor a stony asteroid that broke apart in the air, which also leaves no crater.
- Tiny particles found in the area have been argued both ways.
Your turn: Comet, stony asteroid, or something else?
