Medal of Honor veteran and long-serving Hawaii senator who chaired the 1977 Senate hearing on the CIA's MKUltra program.
What is Daniel Inouye known for?
Daniel K. Inouye served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Japanese American unit of World War II, lost his right arm in combat and later received the Medal of Honor. He was one of Hawaii's first members of Congress after statehood and served in the US Senate from 1963 until his death in 2012, latterly as president pro tempore.
He sat on the Senate Watergate Committee and in 1987 chaired the Senate Iran-Contra committee. As the first chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, he opened the joint hearing of August 3, 1977, on the CIA's MKUltra program, noting that the events under review had happened 12 to 25 years earlier and that the programs of greatest concern had stopped.
The hearing published CIA Director Stansfield Turner's account of 149 recovered MKUltra subprojects and remains a key primary record of the program.
