What is SRI International known for?
SRI International is a non-profit research institute in Menlo Park, California. It was founded in 1946 as the Stanford Research Institute, separated from Stanford University in 1970 and took its current name in 1977. It is known for work in computing, including the computer mouse and an early node of the ARPANET, as well as defence and government research.
In 1972 two SRI laser physicists, Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ, obtained CIA funding for experiments in extrasensory perception and 'remote viewing'. Subjects included the artist Ingo Swann, the former police officer Pat Price and, in 1973, the performer Uri Geller. The researchers reported positive results.
Critics, including psychologists David Marks and Richard Kammann, argued that judges in the trials had access to cues in the transcripts. SRI's psi research continued with government money until 1991, when the work moved to SAIC for the final phase of the STAR GATE program.
SRI is where the CIA-funded psychic experiments behind the Stargate program began.
