The giants the spies saw were a scare story
In Numbers 13 the spies come back from Canaan and say they saw Nephilim, so big that "we were in our own sight as grasshoppers." The same chapter calls their report "an evil report" meant to stop Israel from going in. Our theory: the spies used the old word for the most frightening people they could name, not for real survivors of the Flood.
What fits
- The Bible itself says the report was meant to scare people off (Numbers 13:32).
- Genesis says the Flood killed everyone outside the ark, so survivors would contradict the same book.
What does not
- Deuteronomy describes King Og of Bashan's iron bed as nine cubits long, about 13 feet.
- The Anakim show up again in Joshua as real people who were driven out.
Your turn: Scare story, a real tall people, or something else?
