What is Marco Rubio known for?
Marco Rubio represented Florida in the US Senate from 2011 to 2025 and later became Secretary of State. He served on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, as acting chairman in 2020 and vice chairman from 2021 to 2025.
In 2020 the committee, in Senate Report 116-233 accompanying the intelligence authorization bill, asked the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense for a UAP report within 180 days. Rubio argued publicly that unknown objects in US airspace were a national security question, saying that if they belonged to an adversary the country needed to know.
When the nine-page preliminary assessment was released on June 25, 2021, it found most cases unexplained and did not mention extraterrestrials. Rubio called it an important first step in cataloging incidents, but only a first step. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks then ordered formal reporting procedures across the military.
Called the 2021 UAP intelligence report 'just a first step'.
