Vince Gaffney

Vince Gaffney is a British landscape archaeologist who has worked at the University of Birmingham and the University of Bradford. He is known for applying remote sensing and geophysics to large, hidden landscapes.

From the mid-2000s, Gaffney led projects such as the North Sea Palaeolandscapes Project, which reused three-dimensional seismic survey data gathered by the oil and gas industry to reconstruct the land surface of Doggerland, now under the North Sea. The teams traced buried river valleys, lakes and coastlines, including a large river system they named the Shotton River. The results were published in Europe's Lost World: The Rediscovery of Doggerland (2009). Later work has recovered sediment cores and ancient DNA from the seabed.

He has also led geophysical surveys of the landscape around Stonehenge, where his team identified a large circuit of pits around Durrington Walls. His later book Europe's Lost Frontiers describes the continuing Doggerland research.
