The Sentence Ends: Seventy Generations After Enoch

Now · seventy generations are up

A thought experiment

This series asks what history looks like if the old texts are records, not myths. Each claim rests on a quoted text. It is a reading, not an established fact.

Enoch's prisoners were bound for seventy generations. Count them from Enoch's day and the sentence is served. The Quran says Gog and Magog stay behind Dhul-Qarnayn's iron-and-copper wall only until the day they "are let loose." Revelation says a city will come down out of heaven. Egypt's Atum says he will one day return everything to the waters.

That is where the story starts. Somewhere under Sippar is a buried archive. Somewhere under the desert of Dudael, the jagged rocks are shifting.

What the texts say

Quran 21:96 · PickthallUntil, when Gog and Magog are let loose, and they hasten out of every mound.
Revelation 21:2 · KJVThe holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven.
Luke 3:23–38Luke's family tree has 77 names from God to Jesus. Enoch is seventh, so Jesus is born about seventy generations after Enoch, right when the sentence runs out. Scholars such as Richard Bauckham have pointed this out. A character can ask what has been loose since.

Questions people ask about The sentence ends

What are the seventy generations in the Book of Enoch?

In 1 Enoch the rebel Watchers are bound under the earth for seventy generations, until their judgment. This chapter counts from Enoch's day and concludes the sentence has run out.

How does Luke's genealogy connect to Enoch?

Luke 3:23–38 lists 77 names from God to Jesus, with Enoch seventh, so Jesus is born about seventy generations after Enoch, right when the Watchers' sentence ends. Scholars such as Richard Bauckham have pointed out this pattern.

What does the Quran say about Gog and Magog?

The Quran says Gog and Magog stay behind Dhul-Qarnayn's wall of iron and copper until the day they 'are let loose, and they hasten out of every mound' (Quran 21:96). This chapter sets that beside Revelation's city coming down from heaven.
