What is the Quran?
The Quran is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe it is the word of God (Allah in Arabic), revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over about 23 years, from 610 CE until Muhammad's death in 632. It is written in Arabic and is meant to be recited aloud; the word qur'an means "recitation." It has 114 chapters, called surahs, and 6,236 verses in the most common count. It tells of many figures also found in the Bible, such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Mary and Jesus, and adds others, such as the jinn and the Two-Horned One.
